Do You Need Financial Help? What is SSI?
You can have a better day-to-day life if you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for long-term health problems that make working impossible.
SSI benefits provide monthly checks and qualify you for Medicaid health care. They help you pay for essentials—so you can worry less.
SSI is run by Social Security, which also provides Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. The main difference between SSI and SSDI is that qualifying for SSI is based on your financial situation, while qualifying for SSDI is based on your recent work history.
SSI may be the right kind of disability benefit for you if you haven’t worked much in recent years.
The SSI application can be difficult. But the disability lawyers at Empower Disability, a division of Workers’ Compensation, LLC, can help you apply for SSI—and make the process easier.
We’ve helped thousands of people secure millions of dollars to improve their lives.

What Decides my SSI Eligibility?
These are the basic SSI disability qualifications:
- You have health problems that seriously limit your daily life.
- You cannot work any substantial amount because of your health problems.
- Your medical conditions have lasted or will last at least a year, or they are permanent
- Your financial resources are under limits set by Social Security.
When you apply for SSI, you have to provide evidence supporting each of these points.
Your evidence will include reports from doctor visits, medical test results, and other medical records, as well as information about your personal finances.
You have to be careful with your SSI application, because many people are denied.
Parents should also know that children with disabilities can get SSI, and childhood SSI benefits have their own set of rules.
If you’re wondering whether you or a child qualifies for SSI and what it will take to get benefits, you can get a quick look into it with an initial case evaluation from Empower Disability/Workers’ Compensation, LLC—for FREE.
What Financial Resources Determine Whether I Get SSI Benefits?
People applying for SSI disability benefits are often unsure whether they meet the financial requirements. In addition to limited ongoing income, you also have to show you have limited “resources.”
But what are “resources?”
This is what counts as resources:
- Bank accounts
- Stocks
- Bonds
- Land
- Vehicles
- Life insurance
An individual cannot have countable resources worth more than $2,000. A couple cannot exceed $3,000.
But don’t worry that property like your house will hurt your SSI eligibility.
Several types of resources DO NOT COUNT in calculating whether you qualify for SSI, including:
- The home and land where you live
- One vehicle used for transportation
- Household goods
- Personal effects
- Burial spaces
- Burial funds valued at less than $1,500
- Life insurance with a cash value of less than $1,500
- Up to $100,000 in an ABLE account
- Health flexible spending arrangements
- Disaster relief assistance
- Cash received for the purpose of replacing one of these non-countable resources
